Afterframe

Send your Blender camera and objects straight into After Effects as a self-contained .jsx — position, rotation and lens matched frame for frame, built at your scene's exact resolution and fps. Afterframe Pro also does screen replacement: your content lands on a phone or monitor screen, tracked through the move. BlendFusion's sibling: same job, After Effects instead of Resolve. Nothing to install in After Effects — just run the file.

01Install

Install the add-on

Your download is one file, afterframe-pro-v0.1.2.zip. In Blender: Edit → Preferences → Add-ons → Install… → pick that zip. Don't unzip it first — Blender installs it as a zip — then tick its checkbox to enable it.

Open the panel

In the 3D viewport press N for the sidebar → the Afterframe tab.

Works in Blender 4.0 and newer — installed and export-tested clean in both Blender 4.2 LTS and 5.2 LTS.

02The workflow

1 · Set your camera

Set the scene's active camera (Scene properties) and your frame range — Afterframe bakes exactly what's set there, frame by frame.

2 · Set the panel

World Scale — pixels per Blender unit (100 is a sane default). Comp Name — names the AE comp (blank uses your scene name). Nulls — which objects become AE nulls: Selected objects, All objects, or All empties. Output — where the .jsx is written (blank saves next to your .blend, or your Desktop if it's never been saved).

3 · Export

Click Export .jsx for After Effects.

4 · Run it in After Effects

File → Scripts → Run Script File… → pick the .jsx. It builds a comp at your render resolution and fps.

5 · What lands in the comp

A BLENDER_WORLD null at the comp center (Blender's origin), your camera with position, orientation and zoom animated per frame, and one 3D null per exported object — position and rotation, baked from your actual keyframes.

03Screen replacement

Set Screen in the panel to the mesh you want to replace, such as a phone screen. Then pick one of two ways:

A · One step

in Blender

Also fill Screen Comp (the name of an After Effects comp) or Screen Media (a PNG or MOV). Export and run the .jsx. Your content is already seated on the screen as a SCREEN_REPLACE layer.

B · Seat Selected

in After Effects

Leave Screen Comp and Screen Media blank. Export and run the .jsx: it adds an AF_SCREEN null. In After Effects add any content, select that layer, then run AfterframeSeatSelected.jsx (File → Scripts → Run Script File…). It seats the layer on the screen: anchored at half its size, scaled, oriented and riding the move. Your content stays a live, editable comp.

Plate

optional

Point Plate at the first frame of your rendered footage. It comes in as the background, conformed to your scene's frame rate.

04Something not working?

The questions people actually hit. Tap one to open it.

Which file do I install?

Your download is one file, afterframe-pro-v0.1.2.zip — install it directly through Edit → Preferences → Add-ons → Install… Don't unzip it first; Blender installs it as a zip. Tick its checkbox to enable it. Works in Blender 4.0 and newer.

I installed it, but there's no Afterframe tab.

Hover over the 3D viewport and press N. The tabs run down the right edge of the sidebar. No Afterframe tab there means the add-on is installed but switched off. Tick its checkbox in Edit → Preferences → Add-ons (search "Afterframe").

Export says "no camera", or nothing happens.

Afterframe exports the scene's active camera. Set one in Scene properties before exporting — with no active camera the operator reports an error and cancels instead of writing a file.

How do I run the exported file in After Effects?

In After Effects: File → Scripts → Run Script File… and choose the .jsx Afterframe wrote. There's nothing to install in After Effects — the file is self-contained and builds the comp itself.

Where did the exported .jsx go?

If you left Output blank in the panel, it saved next to your .blend file — or to your Desktop if the file has never been saved. Set Output to a folder to choose the destination yourself; the filename comes from Comp Name, or from your scene name if that's blank too.

What exactly does the export include?

A self-contained .jsx that builds an After Effects comp at your scene's render resolution and fps: a BLENDER_WORLD null at the comp center, your active camera (position, orientation and zoom, animated per frame), and one 3D null per exported object carrying position and rotation. The Nulls dropdown picks which objects export — the ones you've selected, every object in the scene, or every empty.

Which Blender versions does it work with?

The add-on states Blender 4.0 or newer as its minimum. Version 0.1.2 is checked installing and exporting, screen replacement included, in both Blender 4.2 LTS and Blender 5.2 LTS.

Where do I get the Seat Selected script?

Download AfterframeSeatSelected.jsx from this page. It only works on a comp exported by Afterframe Pro with Screen set, because it looks for the AF_SCREEN null.

Seat Selected says "no AF_SCREEN null in this comp".

Set Screen to your screen mesh in Blender, export again, and run the new .jsx first. Then open that comp, select your content layer and run Seat Selected.

The plate looks wrong or won't show.

Render the background as a single-layer EXR, or PNG or MOV. Multilayer EXRs need an extra After Effects plugin to pull a pass, which a plain plate doesn't need.
