SF Glass.

Five procedural glass materials for Blender — clear, frosted, seeded, and two tints. Not five materials, really: one node group with different numbers in it, so anything one variant does, another can be dialled into. Tint, roughness, IOR, frost, smudge and bump are all exposed where you can reach them, not buried in a node you have to go hunting for. No image textures, nothing to unpack.

Read this before you download it: render it in Cycles.

That isn't a preference, it's what glass is. Multiple glass surfaces can't see each other correctly through EEVEE's raytraced refraction, and a drinking glass has four of them. The materials will load in EEVEE, but a tumbler won't read as glass. No amount of simplifying a material changes this — it's the medium, not the pack. If you work EEVEE-first, this pack will be less useful to you than SF Wood, which is also free and renders in both engines. Better to know before you download it than after.

Then start with section 01, not with the material theory. The single most common question on any Blender asset pack is "where did it go?" — the answer is the Asset Browser, and it needs one bit of setup the first time.

01Get it into Blender

Two ways in. The first is the proper one and takes about thirty seconds; the second is the shortcut if you just want the material in this file and don't care about a library.

Unzip it

Unzip SF-Glass-Pack-v1.1.zip somewhere you'll keep it — not your Downloads folder, since Blender is going to point at this folder from now on. Something like Documents/Blender/Assets/SF-Glass/.

Register it once

route A · recommended

Edit → Preferences → File Paths → Asset Libraries → + (the plus button), then pick the unzipped folder — the folder, not the .blend inside it. Give it a name if you like. Close Preferences; Blender remembers this forever.

Open an Asset Browser

route A

Change any editor to Asset Browser (the editor-type dropdown in the corner of any area — the little grid icon), then pick your library from the dropdown at the top-left. You'll see five glasses under Starting Frame → Glass.

Quickest way to get one: split the timeline at the bottom of the default layout and switch it to Asset Browser. You don't need a fancy workspace.

Or skip all that

File → Append → browse into SF_Glass_v1.blend → Material → pick the one you want. It lands in the current file and you assign it in the Material Properties tab like any other material.

Route B is per-file. Route A means every future project already has them.

02Put it on something

Drag it on

From the Asset Browser, drag a glass straight onto your object in the 3D viewport, then switch the viewport to Rendered with Cycles as the engine. Material Preview uses EEVEE, so it will lie to you about what this looks like.

Give it something to refract

Glass is almost entirely what's behind it. On an empty grey world it renders as a faint outline and looks broken. Put an HDRI, a lit backdrop, or literally anything with contrast behind the object and it comes to life — this is the single most common reason a new glass material "doesn't work".

Solid geometry reads best

Real glass has thickness. A single-sided plane will refract oddly because there's no back surface for the light to exit through. If you're modelling a glass, give it a wall thickness — a Solidify modifier is enough.

03The five

Same generator, different numbers.

Clear

Straight optical glass. The baseline everything else is dialled away from — start here when you want to build your own look.

Frosted

Scattered, translucent. Frost Unevenness is what keeps this from looking like a uniform sandblast — real frosted glass is blotchy, and the control is there because that's what sells it.

Seeded

Relief in the surface of the glass — the bubbled, uneven look of hand-blown or cathedral glass. It's a property of the glass itself, not dirt on it. (Smudge is a separate control, and it's flat. The variant was renamed from "Smudged" for exactly this reason.)

Tinted Green

The bottle-glass / float-glass cast you see on a thick edge.

Tinted Amber

Warm brown — beer bottles, apothecary jars, whisky decanters.

04Every value a slider

This is the difference between a material you own and one you downloaded. Select the object, go to the Shading tab, and click the SF_Glass group node. The whole panel is controls.

The glass itself

  • Tint
  • Roughness
  • IOR
  • Scale

IOR is the one that changes the character most. 1.45–1.55 is window and bottle glass; push past 1.7 and it starts reading as crystal or gemstone.

Surface treatment

  • Frost Amount
  • Frost Unevenness
  • Smudge
  • Bump

A little Smudge is the cheapest realism in the pack — perfectly clean glass reads as CG, and fingerprints are what your eye expects on something someone has held.

Most packs hand you somebody's finished decision, and if it isn't the glass you wanted, tough. Here, if Frosted is too heavy, turn Frost Amount down. If Tinted Green is too green, change the colour. The five are starting points, not the product.

05What it costs to render

Measured against a plain material on the same Cycles shot: every variant in this pack lands between −5% and +6%. The glass is, for practical purposes, free.

Which inverts the usual assumption — people expect procedural glass to be the expensive thing in the scene, and it isn't. The real cost of this pack is needing Cycles at all, not the shaders. Budget your render time for the engine, not for the material.

06Two things stated plainly

No volume absorption

Tint sits on base colour, so the colour does not deepen with thickness the way real glass does. On a windowpane you will never notice. On a bottle or a thick-based tumbler you will — the thick part should go noticeably darker, and here it won't.

If that matters for your shot, adding a Volume Absorption node inside SF_Glass is a small edit and the group is open for you to do it — nothing is locked.

"Seeded" is not "smudged"

Seeded means relief in the glass — hand-blown, cathedral, bubbled. Smudge is dirt on it, and it's flat. They're separate controls and they do different jobs; the variant was renamed so the name matches the render.

07Good to know

Blender version

Built and verified in Blender 5.2. It will not open in Blender 4.x, including 4.2 LTS — that's a Blender file-format change, not something the pack can work around. You need 5.2 or newer.

What you see when you open it

All five already sitting on basic shapes under a default light, with a floor and a camera — so you can see what they do before you use any of them. Delete the lot once you've had a look; the materials are independent of it.

Nothing to trust us with

100% procedural — zero image textures, no scans, no AI, nothing that phones home. Nothing to unpack, no texture folder to keep beside the file, and no missing-file surfaces when you move the .blend. The whole pack is 758 KB.

What you can do with it

Released under the MIT License. Render whatever you like, commercially or not, and sell the result. Modify it, build on it, ship it inside your own work — no credit required, no royalties. The one condition MIT carries: if you pass the material files themselves on to someone else, keep the copyright notice and licence text with them. LICENSE.txt is in the zip.
