SF Wood — free procedural wood materials for Blender

Seven woods from one generator.

SF Wood is a free set of seven procedural wood materials for Blender — walnut, oak, cherry, pine, ebony, varnished walnut and weathered grey. They all come out of one generator, so every control is a slider: move the growth rings, shift the pith off-centre, add knots, change the grain. It's a solid volume, not a texture wrapped round the outside — cut a face and it shows real end grain, the way timber does.

Same bowl, same light, same generator — only the material changes.

What it does.

Sliders, not a texture

Every wood here is the same node group with different numbers. Ring spacing and contrast, pith offset, log stretch, grain, knot amount, size and depth — all exposed as sliders. That is the difference between a material you own and an image you downloaded.

Solid wood, not a wrapper

The grain is a volume built around a log axis, so it behaves like timber. The two cut faces of a cube show end grain and the four sides show long grain, automatically. Cut, bevel or boolean the mesh and the grain stays correct.

One material, both engines

Everything is procedural — Noise, Voronoi, Colour Ramp, Mapping, Bump. No image textures, nothing that renders differently between engines, so a single material reads the same in EEVEE and in Cycles.

Wear included, on purpose

The pack ships with SF_Imperfections — scratches, dust, smudges and micro-surface. It is in the free build deliberately: wear is the part that teaches you what procedural materials can actually do.

Questions.

Is SF Wood really free?

Yes — the whole seven-material pack is free. Leave an email and the download unlocks, this visit and every one after. No watermark, no account, no limits on what you make with it.

How do I install it?

Unzip it, then either point Blender at the folder under Preferences → File Paths → Asset Libraries and drag the materials in from the Asset Browser, or skip all that and use File → Append → the .blend → Material. The setup guide walks through both.

Which Blender version do I need?

It needs Blender 5.2 or newer. It is a .blend saved by 5.2, so older builds cannot open it. It uses only long-standing procedural nodes, so it should be happy on any recent build.

Does it work in EEVEE, or only Cycles?

Both, from the same material. There is nothing Cycles-only in the graph — no pointiness, no bevel node — so what you see in EEVEE is what Cycles renders.

Can I use it in commercial work?

Yes. Render whatever you like with it and sell the result. The one thing you cannot do is repackage the materials themselves and redistribute them as your own material pack.

Does it use AI or image textures?

Neither. It is 100% procedural — no image textures, no scans, no AI, and nothing phones home. That is also why the download is under two megabytes.
