I spent a whole afternoon once trying to make a flat shape look like it was floating in front of another flat shape. Hand-keyframing blur. Faking a little scale offset. Nudging things a pixel at a time so my eye would believe one was closer than the other.
It never quite worked. Flat is flat. Your brain knows.
Here’s the thing nobody tells you when you start out: depth isn’t a look you paint on. It’s information. The computer either knows how far away something is, or it’s guessing. And when it’s guessing, you’re the one doing all the work by hand.
So I wired a shortcut into one of my own tools, and it changed how I composite. I want to give it to you.
A depth matte is just your animation, in gray
Render your animation twice. Once in full color. Once where every shape is painted a flat shade of gray, keyed to how close it is. Near shapes come out bright. Far shapes come out dark. Black background.
That gray version is a depth matte. It carries no color, no style, none of the look. It carries one thing: distance. And distance is exactly what Resolve needs to fake real depth.
I build my flat shape animations in Background, one of the free tools in Cue. Background already knows the stacking order of every shape it draws, so it already knows what’s near and what’s far. There’s a Depth Matte toggle right in the Canvas menu. Flip it on and the preview snaps to grayscale: three clean bands. Near is light (about 90% white), mid is gray, far is dark. Three discrete steps, on purpose, so you have clean break points to key against later.
Export both. Nothing to install.
Toggle Depth Matte on, export. Toggle it off, export again. You now have two clips that line up frame for frame: your color graphic, and its gray depth twin.
Both render right in the browser tab. There’s no plugin, no extra app, no After Effects project you’ll open exactly once. You make the thing, you export the thing, you close the tab. That’s the whole point of building it this way.
Wiring it into Resolve
Two ways to use the matte, depending on what you want.
For clean cutouts (parallax): drop your color clip on V1, a Text+ title on V2, and the depth matte on V3. Select V3, open the Inspector’s Composite tab, set Composite Mode to Luma Key. Now drag the Threshold up to around 180. That isolates the brightest band, your near shapes, and lets them punch through the title while the mid and far shapes stay behind it. Your text is suddenly wedged in space.
Drop the threshold to about 100 and both the near and mid shapes come forward. You’re picking which layers sit over your title by choosing a number. Three bands, three break points.
For depth of field (the soft, expensive look): take it into Fusion. Bring in the depth matte, run it through a ChannelBooleans node to load that grayscale into the depth channel, then feed it to a DepthBlur node. Now Resolve blurs your flat graphic by distance. Near stays sharp, far goes soft, like a real lens. On shapes you drew in a browser.
The first time I saw a flat circle go properly out of focus behind a sharp one, I actually laughed. It’s a cheat. It looks like it cost money.
Why this matters more than it sounds
This isn’t really a Resolve tip. It’s a way of thinking about your own work.
Most of the time, when something looks hard, it’s because you’re trying to fake information the computer could just hand you. The move isn’t to grind harder by hand. It’s to find the one piece of data that does the work for you, and a grayscale render is one of the cheapest, most powerful pieces of data there is.
You don’t need a 3D program. You don’t need a depth-sensing camera. You need a black-and-white version of something you already made, and a luma key you already know how to use.
I almost didn’t ship the Depth Matte toggle. It felt too niche, too small. Then I used it on a real cut and it saved me an hour, and I remembered that the small weird features are usually the ones that turn out to matter.
So here it is. Open Background, make a few drifting shapes, flip on Depth Matte, and go wedge a title into space. You’ll know in five minutes whether it’s for you.
Go make something. The depth was there the whole time. You just had to render it.
